Pay-Per-Call Advertising Explained for Local Business Owners
By Household Referral Magazine5 min read
How pay-per-call works
Your ad carries its own tracked phone number. When a homeowner calls it, the call is routed to your business and logged. If the call meets the billing rules, it becomes a billable call.
Because you pay for results rather than only for space, the risk of a slow month is shared between you and the publisher.
What counts as a billable call
A call is billable only when all of the following are true.
- It comes from a new caller who has not phoned your tracked number before.
- It lasts 45 seconds or more.
- It is a genuine inquiry, not spam or a wrong number.
Flat rate or pay-per-call?
Flat-rate pricing suits businesses that want a predictable cost and expect plenty of calls. Pay-per-call suits those who want a lower up-front commitment, or who are testing print for the first time.
Fees differ by category, because a roofing or remodeling job is worth more than a small repair. You can see the current tiers on the advertising page.
Get the most from your calls
Answer quickly, since homeowners often call two or three businesses. Make sure whoever answers knows the offer in your ad, and use the call recordings to coach your team. A booked estimate is worth far more than a missed call.
